- 1884 – Ernest Lemon, Chief Mechanical Engineer (1931–1932) and later Vice President for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, is born (d. 1954).
- 1941 – Chesapeake and Ohio Railway officials accept the first 2-6-6-6 Allegheny steam locomotive from the Lima Locomotive Works. Despite many claims made by Alco, Union Pacific Railroad and others for the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy, the Alleghenies are the largest steam locomotives ever built for service in the United States.
- 1965 – Căile Ferate Române (pictured), the national railway system of Romania, opens its first electrified segment using the existing Braşov-Predeal line.
- 2003 – The European Commission approves the franchise of the Trans-Pennine Express JV between Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and other northern England locations as a joint operation of FirstGroup plc and Keolis.[1]
