Nicknames, once they catch on, tend to take on a life of their own. Children often make the association that person's name (or nickname) is that person. Changing their name would be like changing their Frontal Cortex, Cerebellum, Medulla Oblongata, or other primary control modules.

Anyway - I don't like the nickname Ferg (really - I don't). Fortunately, however, I do remember the first person who used it in a sentence. Subsequently, I will with malice, forethought and before my inevitable death, track the person down and poke out their eyeballs :-).

Or damage the Occipital Lobe somehow...
